Open weight, not open to every category

Edition of 18 October, published on 19 October 2026.

In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, an open class brings together eligible athletes without the usual separation by body weight. That does not remove all the other entry conditions. Age, belt, gi or no-gi format and the organiser's rules still matter. Treat the absolute as a specific additional division, rather than assuming your original registration automatically gives you a place in it.

A concrete IBJJF example

The published rules for the 2026 Balneário Camboriú International Open illustrate those distinctions. They list first-, second- and third-place finishers as eligible, with specific provisions for adult black belts. White belts do not have a gi open class at this event, and the juvenile blue and purple belt categories divide their open classes into light and heavy groups. These are details of this event's published programme, not a promise that every BJJ competition works identically.

The practical check before leaving the venue

The IBJJF help centre explains that registration often happens at the podium after receiving your division medal, while some categories use advance registration. Check the actual deadline and procedure on your event page. Confirm eligibility with the staff before leaving, and discuss the extra matches with your coach. For a spectator, understanding the entry conditions is equally useful: an absolute bracket can include different weights while still preserving other categories. Read the bracket heading before comparing two athletes' routes to the final.
